Few programs can compare to the successes of the Waukee Girls’ Track and Field team. Led by head coach, Jesse Hunt and his staff, the Warriors have won the large school state championship three times in the last 5 years (2009, 2012, 2013) and state team pentathlon championships in 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2012. In addition, Waukee teams have won 9 conference championships and 11 regional titles since 2002.
Large participation numbers have helped contribute to the team’s success as more than 120 girls in grades 9-12, represent Waukee on the track and in the field. It is truly an all around team effort as Waukee has qualified at least 18 of the 19 events to the State meet in each of the last 7 seasons. Once qualified for State, the Warriors have been very successful. Waukee has placed in events at the State meet 125 times since 2002.
Waukee’s recent relay successes at the Drake Relays and State meet have been unparalleled. Waukee girls’ teams have won 12 Drake Relays titles since 2006 and 16 state meet relays. Eight relays have set state meet records and of those, five also broke Iowa All Time records. Waukee relays and individuals can be found on the IGHSAU All Time top 20 list, an impressive 28 times. Waukee athletes have also been awarded the “Drake Relays Athlete of the Meet” and “Gatorade Track Athlete of the Year” awards.
Individual and relay successes have allowed several Waukee athletes an opportunity to compete collegiately including 12 at the Division I level.
