Waukee High School Dance Team Finishes First at Regionals
Waukee High School’s Varsity Dance Team continued their winning streak at the Spirit of America Midwest Regional Dance Championship, January 7, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The team competed inside the Mall of America and finished first in all three categories.
The categories included Jazz, Hip-hop and Pom. Competing against Waukee were teams from Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Nebraska. At last year’s regional competition Waukee finished first in Pom and Hip-hop, seventh in Jazz, and also received the Crowd Appeal award.
In preparation for regionals, the team practiced four days a week– three of those practices being 5:30-7:15 in the morning.
“During practices we incorporated 60 minutes of conditioning/jazz technique to continue to build stamina and reach technical goals that were necessary to place well regionally and nationally,” said Coach Allie Mayberger.
Waukee will now attend the UDA National Championship, working for their fourth top ten National finish. The competition will take place February 3-5, inside the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
“Winning all three categories is an amazing accomplishment for us. What an opportunity to compete against outstanding schools all over the midwest, receive feedback from outstanding judges and reaffirm the great preparations we are making for nationals. Most importantly, this past weekend we had fun. I believe this team fell more in love with the sport of dance. There isn’t much more I could ask for,” Mayberger said.
