Jazz One Earns First Place at Iowa Jazz Championships
On April 5, Waukee Jazz One earned first place at the 2018 Iowa Jazz Championships held at CY Stephens Auditorium on the campus of Iowa State University. The Iowa Jazz Championships is an annual state event that invites the top 15 jazz ensembles for each class 1A-4A (60 bands total), bringing together many of Iowa’s finest young jazz musicians to compete in one of the largest single day festivals in the nation. Jazz Bands qualify for the Iowa Jazz Championships through district and independent qualifying festivals. Each jazz ensemble performs a twenty-minute set before a panel of three judges during the morning and afternoon competition. The top two performing jazz bands from each class then competes again in the evening for the Iowa Jazz Championship state titles. This was Waukee’s second 1st place finish (2012, 2018), and the eleventh consecutive year in which the band has finished in the top three (2nd place – 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015) (3rd place – 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2017).
