Waukee Wrestlers Enjoy Successful Week at State

The Waukee wrestling team had a busy and successful four days at Wells Fargo Arena last week.  On Wednesday the team placed sixth in the State Dual Tournament.  In a rematch of last year’s state championship dual, Waukee lost to Fort Dodge by a score of 32-30 in the opening round.  The Warriors rebounded with 51-14 victory over Epworth Western Dubuque in the consolation semifinals before losing to Bettendorf in the consolation finals.

On Thursday, a school record 10 Waukee wrestlers competed in the first round of the state traditional tournament.  Five of those wrestlers stood on the podium Saturday night as state medalists.  Anthony Zach avenged a state runner up finish a year ago by winning the 170-pound state championship.  He left no doubt this year going through the tournament without allowing a single point.  Cody Anderson followed up 3rd and 5th place finishes the previous two years with another 3rd place finish at 138 pounds.  Thurman Christensen placed 4th at 113 pounds, Mason Seifried was 5th at 152 pounds and Nick Miller placed 7th at 120 pounds.  Three other wrestlers (Carter Smith 126 lbs., Cael Thorson 220 lbs., and Connor Arndt 285 lbs.) won matches and contributed valuable team points.  Freshman Griffin Gammell and sophomore Jermaine Sammler were defeated in their two matches on Thursday but gained valuable experience at the state meet level.

The team scored 75 points and placed 5th in the team race.  Waukee has emerged as one of the top large school wrestling programs in Iowa placing seventh, second and fifth at the last three state meets.
